This is a placeholder web page for this website.
Currently just a list of some of the servers currently being ran. Will probably work on making it a little more informative and better looking in the future.
This section is for posting any additional servers we are running.
Previously used jails on FreeBSD to host game servers. I don't recall how I was managing this server as it's been several years. I think I was just using one of the jail management packages.
I believe when I replaced that server, I switched to using LinuxGSM for a couple of months. This was pretty similar to how I had previously been managing game servers but a bit more streamlined specifically for game servers.
It had sat mostly unused except for me testing some things and playing around on it and I was asked if I could host a specific modded Minecraft server. I decided to do a wipe and fresh install. (Ultimately, I ended up not using this machine in the end because even with pre-generating chunks, it did not run very smoothly with just the one instance of the modded Minecraft server, even after adding additional RAM and upgrading the CPU to the best one the motherboard supported. Thankfully I had the RAM on hand and the CPU only ran me ~US$8 on eBay. The motherboard does support an additional CPU with a special daughter card, but the daughter card isn't quite as cheap and I don't think it would ultimately have improved performance in Minecraft.)
I then did some digging to see what all was recommended for managing game servers. LinuxGSM was still being recommended as a solid option, but AMP and Pterodactyl seemed to be being pushed as an easier option managed through a browser. Ultimately, I decided to go with Pterodactyl for management.
I've been pretty happy with Pterodactyl as it's been able to handle everything I've tossed at it. While I have tested running a Minecraft server as a hidden service via tor back when I was hosting via FreeBSD, I don't think I'd be able to do that via Pterodactyl, but I also have no need of doing that currently. I would probably use a dedicated machine for that use case so there couldn't be any leaks between the two.
I know Pelican is now also an option, though it hadn't been forked yet when I originally set all of this up. As Pterodactyl is still being updated and is still doing everything I need, I don't see any need to rush to switch to Pelican, though if I need to reinstall/change hardware/etc. then I might take a look at switching then. AMP is still not off the table either. LinuxGSM was pretty simple as well and I wouldn't really have any trouble going back to that either.
